Becoming Catholic

Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. -- 1 Tim 4:12

Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) for Youth

The process of initiation for unbaptized youth marks a profound and sacred journey. Young people are prepared to receive the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist (First Communion), and Confirmation. Families to gather for catechesis at 10:00 followed by Holy Mass at 12:00 pm. Our youth participate in specialized sessions and retreats designed to deepen their understanding and commitment to their faith in Christ.

Registration
  • What Documents to Do I Need for My Child?

To register, parents need to submit a  Birth Certificate for unbaptized youth preparing for full initiation (Baptism, Communion, Confirmation). If your child has receive one or more sacraments, please bring their sacramental certificates to the registration.

  • Do We Need to Find a Sponsor?

Yes. Sponsors should have received all the sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Holy Communion, and Confirmation), attend Mass regularly, and if married, they must have been married in the Church. If there is no one who can function as a sponsor in your family, one of our parishioners at St. Vincent's may be assigned to you if you wish. Of course, if you know a St. Vincent's parishioner whom you would like to invite to sponsor your child, feel free to ask that individual to participate in the RCIA process with you.

  • If my child was baptized Catholic, is the RCIA right for them?

Yes. Those who have only received the sacrament of baptism have not been fully catechized (that is, initiated or taught) in the Catholic faith. And so, it makes sense that the RCIA process is a good fit for your child. As a baptized Catholic, your child will be enrolled in the RCIA as a candidate.

  • What Happens during the RCIA if my Child is Already Baptized?

Except for some of the rites being slightly different, there is little difference. Those who are baptized are called candidates and those who are not baptized are called catechumens. Also, the rite of initiation for those who are not baptized (catechumens) includes a baptism. Those who are baptized will experience their first sacrament of reconciliation just before the rite of initiation.
