Anointing of the Sick

New Title

Anointing of the Sick

Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. -- James 5:13-15

The Benefits of the Anointing of the Sick

The Anointing of the Sick is administered by a Catholic priest in times of illness particularly at the approach of death. It offers both the grace of spiritual fortitude and even physical strength to the sick person. As likely one of the final sacraments a person might receive, it is founded upon the Christian belief that a sacrament is visible sign of God’s invisible grace, instituted by Jesus Christ to transmit this grace through the Holy Spirit.

Who Can Receive the Sacrament?

A person can receive the anointing of the sick as soon as they begin to be in danger of death from sickness or old age. When this is the case, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. The sacrament can administered again if the sick person had recovered after his previous reception of anointing or if, during the same illness, his dangerous condition becomes more serious.
