Be Sealed with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit - Wisdom, Understanding Knowledge, Counsel, Fortitude, Piety, and the Fear of the Lord

Two-Year Sacramental Preparation for Teens in High School

The sacrament of Confirmation is a crucial step in the journey of Christian initiation, following Baptism and the reception of First Holy Communion. It is administered by a bishop through the anointing with Sacred Chrism by the laying on of hands, accompanied by the words "Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit". This sacrament imparts a particular character and enriches the baptized with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, completing the path of Christian initiation. It conforms the Christian disciple more closely to Christ as prophet, priest, and king. Confirmation strengthens the baptized, deepens their bond with the Church and empowers them to live out their faith boldly and defend it courageously.

What Does Preparation for Confirmation Involve?

Youth preparation for Confirmation is a two-year process including formation in prayer, religious education, and service. Teens will participate in faith formation alongside their peers in the parish community with parents, catechists, and sponsors, who will all witness to their readiness to witness a Catholic life.

Teens preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation will, typically, begin to prepare as they enter their freshman year of high school. Through this process, teens will complete hours of service to both their community and to the parish, attend regular faith formation classes through the parish and attend retreat experiences. They will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation after completing the preparation process, typically in the spring of their junior year. Program registration begins in June each year and classes begin in the following September. To enroll your teen, please contact Sr. Alicia Lopez at (213) 749-8950.

Adults and teens who were baptized Catholic but have not received Eucharist or Confirmation prepare for these sacraments. Candidates generally receive these sacraments at the Easter Vigil Mass each year. For more information, click the button below.
